A Brief History of Kombat Federation 1992 to 2023
Kombatkids was established in 1992 by husband and wife team Steve and Selina Moore. 
Chief Instructor Steve Moore has over 30 years teaching experience and over forty years of martial arts training. Steve has been in the fitness industry for many years teaching aerobics, step aerobics, weight training, gym instruction and his passion for the martial arts played a bigger role. The first karate class attended was in Lichfield and then went onto train at the renowned Temple karate centre in Birmingham in the 80's under Toru Takimazawa 6th Dan. Thereafter, Steve went onto train with Fred Rose and Roger Vickerman in their respective dojos.
Kombatkids started with a very small group of students with only Steve teaching and were affiliated to UKASKO in Manchester, entering tournaments on a regular basis all over the country and were teaching Kickboxing and Karate at this time. Students entered the Cimac World Cup on a number of occasions where the fighting was particularly hard. Selina and Steve attended many competitions particularly in Stockport, Manchester and the Liverpool area.
In 1995, Kombatkids went independent teaching Karate and Kickboxing and opening their first club in Walsall. Steve and Selina, parents themselves, recognised it was not ideal for children to be taught alongside adults when a child's physical and mental development is much different to an adult and so they offered specialised classes for 'children only'.
In 2002 Steve started training regularly with Sensei Sakagami 8th Dan and decided to affiliate with Wadokai England. This period was interesting as the clubs were growing and at this stage after much discussion by Steve and Selina decided to focus solely on Karate. They believed kickboxing was limited and really wanted to focus in depth on a traditional martial art. Kombatkids would now only teach traditional Karate Kata, basics and pair work and follow Sakagami's teaching of Wado. Sakagami Sensei had started leading Steve, on the right path of trying to master Karate technique properly.
Steve, Selina and Paul all started studying Kobujutsu the Classical Okinanwan weapons system with Phil Snewin and carried on training with Ray Wilkes for many years. Sensei Ray passed away in 2017, Steve carried on training with Steve Kazmarack, passing his 1st Dan in 2018 being graded by Sensei Julian Mead after 17 years of training.
Over the years, Kombatkids have been to various European tournaments with successful students having the opportunity to compete at the Wadokai World Cup in Japan 2005 & 2015. Steve and Selina were on the organising committee for the Wadokai All Nations Championships held in Leicester 2018, a major championships featuring many athletes from all over the World with a large squad from Japan. Selina, in particular, was part of the committee in the organising the competition, resulting in a tournament to remember.
Selina and Steve have developed very good relations with many organisations within the martial arts world over the years. In 2009, Kombat Federation, now a completely independent association affiliated to the English Karate Federation. Chief Instructor Steve, Senior Instructor Jamie Donaghy and Senior Instructor Paul still continue to train with Sensei Sakagami privately on a weekly basis.
Kombat Federation was affiliated to Wadokai England (WKE) for many years. WKE is a group of associations/clubs all training in Wado-kai to preserve the style. WKE is run directly by Sensei Sakagami 8th Dan. It is affiliated directly to the Japanese Karate Federation Wadokai (JKF) based in Tokyo Japan.
The JKF Wadokai is an internationally renowned Karate organisation consisting of 1350 branches within Japan and 250 groups outside Japan. Through being members of this organisation our serious competition students will have the opportunity to attend selections for European Championships held every year and World Championships held every 4 years in Japan.
Kombatkids is recognised and has gained an excellent reputation, it is a business. As a business, parents have the security that Kombatkids has a management to oversee, regulate and ensure all safeguarding practices are in place. They have created a fabulous team of instructors that all follow the same format of adminstration, teaching and class structure.
Kombatkids has spent years learning/study, developing, evolving and continually gaining a greater understanding of children. Kombatkids is a unique organisation, with many clubs over six counties and over 1800 students.
